TableWar display tray

Hello everyone!  After enjoying Spring Break I came back to all sorts of exams and projects that have limited my hobby time tremendously.  I did manage to finish my TableWar display tray for the 1 Hour A Night challenge.  I have a lot of projects in the works coming up and I hope to keep up since I don't have any pressing school work to do.  I have committed to complete a squad of Stormboyz this month, but I am not really sure why I decided to do them other than the box was taking up space.  They are the older metal/plastic kit that I got in a trade a while back.  Now that you are caught up, let's check out the TableWar tray!

I got this tray for free at LVO as part of a partnership with TableWar and James at 1 Hour A Night.  If we have enough participants, then TableWar will vote on their favorite with the winner receiving an entire TableWar case!  Pretty cool prize so I decided to jump on board.   The rings are glued onto the metal tray and are the same height as the border.  I masked off the inside of the rings and cut around the negative space.

Looks like a floppy disc... If anyone still remembers those.

This allowed me to fill in the space with drywall compound in order to create height.  I knew that I wanted to make a stone arch so I put cork to mark my boundary.

Once the compound was dry I filled the gaps. Once those were dry I primed the whole thing black.  Now in usual fashion my WIP shots are missing from this point forward, so you will have to take my word for it.  Fast forward!

I decided to make a base for my Demons instead of my Orks.  I wanted to make a portal to the warp.  For the arch, I made the whole thing out of cork and dry-brushed to make it resemble stone.  I added skulls and chains that I had in my bitz box.

For the base I used the same coffee and PVA with added red paint to match the bases that I had done for my Bloodletters last summer.  If you missed that one, basically the moisture in the PVA glue hydrates the instant coffee creating a gooey slime.  It also has the advantage of smelling really nice!

I was going for a fiery portal to hell kind of vibe so I painted a clear piece of plasti-card from the packaging of a toy.  I did a few different things but I liked the way plain fire seemed to match the Bloodletters.  I'm happy with how it turned out.
