Gorkanaut Painting... To Done!

This is the largest model I have painted in my relatively short hobby career.  I did a lot of research on different techniques and I am very pleased with the result.  Thanks for checking out my blog while I have been busy with work and school.  I hope the results will be worth the wait (trying out a new camera)!  Anyways...

As many of my readers may know (and if you are new you know now!), my army has mainly a Deff Skullz theme due to the fluff of my Warlord, Mad Mek Screwbitz.  I decided to go for the Gorkanaut instead of the Morkanaut because I like the gun.  When I first assembled the kit I didn't even consider magnetizing or have any idea how to do it.  If I get another one I might magnetize it.
WAAAGH! Build me a light box!
I had started painting this in a totally different style and decided to go back and start over since I wasn't pleased with how it was turning out.
Original start
I went back and painted everything with P3's Pig Iron, from top to bottom.  I did a dry brush of Pig Iron in the interior.
Heavy Dry Brush
I used MacRagge Blue initially and then just started blending blues together to make it feel more Orky.  P3's Cygnar Blue Base, Underbelly Blue, and Meredius Blue all glopped together to come up with some interesting tones.  I didn't even care if I could replicate the shade since Orks would be using whatever paint was lying around or that they could make out of ground up squigs or whatever.  This freedom in palette really set me free from making the model look too uniform and got me into the Ork mindest.
Da Klaw!
I painted the Klaw of Gork (or possibly Mork) and a few of the other details with a mixture of Pig Iron, Citadel's Brass Scorpion, and P3's Blighted Gold.  The red cables and rokkit tops was Skorne Red also from P3.
The entire model was washed several times with a mix of Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade which I also mixed together.  I did sponge weathering starting with Pig Iron, then moving to Chainmail, and then Scorched Brown (Rhinox Hide).  I followed that with a dry-brush of Ryza Rust.
I actually did some freehand details.  The rokkits were really fun to do and this practice will help me with all of the Tankbustas I have planned.  I also dressed up the Deffstorm Mega Shoota with some flair.
MOAR DAKKA!
The last thing I need to do is to add some flock and a few details to the base.  I did the base the same way I did Boss Nob Grimjaw, using the sodium bicarbonate, painting Agrellan Earth, and dry-brush with Screaming Skull.
This was a really fun project that has given me some confidence toward painting larger models.  I am going to try to get back onto my hour a night routine now that school is over.  I do have a quite a bit more on my 2014/2015 Hobby To Do list.  Thanks for checking it out.  Comments are always welcome and don't be afraid to follow!  I have been getting the modeling itch again and I am going to finish up my newest Battle-Wagon, so be on the look out for a crazy scratch-build.  Happy Holidays!

  1. That's a good job Mek & it feels like you enjoyed painting it, the hour a day habit is a god way of getting stuff done but can at times be hard to do.

    1. Thanks. I really did enjoy painting this. The hour a night can be tough but the amount of progress is worth it.

  2. Awesome job mate! Your decision to repaint was must have been hard, but it was a very good choice. Swapping the position of the blue sections with metallics makes it look more orfentik in my opinion ;-) Man, I wish I could just get something finished, the past week has been horrid.

    1. I am a big fan of the Ork walkers too. Thanks for checking it out. I looked up a bunch of different weathering techniques and I think the rust really pulls it all together.

  5. Looks great! But the camera's flash washes out the details a bit. Time to scratch build a light box :) May I reccomend a styrafoam ice box?
